Rentals

ormed by Matt Sharp (22 September 1969, Bangkok, Thailand; vocals, bass, Moog synthesizer), Cherielynn Westrich (vocals/Moog synthesizer), Petra Haden (b. 11 October 1971, New York City, New York, USA; violin/vocals), Rod Cervera (guitar), Patrick Wilson (b. 1 February 1969, Buffalo, New York, USA; drums) and Tom Grimley (keyboards), the Rentals were inaugurated as a spin-off project from Sharp and Wilson’s better-known Weezer. An attempt to escape some of the preconceptions that surrounded that band’s output, Sharp summarized the reason for the Rentals’ creation thus: ‘If you spend too much time sitting around doing nothing, you end up falling in the shitter. It makes life less boring to be busy.’ The band was formed at the end of 1994 by friends from the local Los Angeles, California, USA music scene (Haden played with That Dog). As well as the expected punk pop guitar, Return Of The Rentals also featured rudimentary keyboard playing that reminded many of the early 80s New York new wave scene. It was promoted by support slots on tours with Garbage and Blur.
