(b Greenock, Strathclyde, 15 Feb 1913; d nr Bath, 28 Dec 1989). Painter of Irish and Scottish descent. He spent his childhood in Scotland and from 1924 at Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh. His Irish father, a house- and sign-painter, arranged for him to take lessons from an art teacher at Enniskillen, who introduced him at the age of 14 to the work of Cézanne, Modigliani, Picasso and Derain.
