Forrest Gathercoal, 80, passed away on August 9th, 2012 from Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a rare blood disorder commonly known as MDS.He was born Forrest James Gathercoal in Chicago, Illinois on May 26, 1932, to Paul and Marion Gathercoal. In 1940, he moved with his parents to Corvallis, Oregon. Forrest attended and graduated from Corvallis High School in 1950. He was a four-year letterman with the Corvallis High School tennis team. Forrest met his wife of 59 years, Joan Baines Gathercoal, on the Oregon State College campus.During the Korean War, Forrest served in the armed services at Amarillo Air Force Base, Amarillo, Texas. When his term of service ended he returned to Eugene, Oregon to complete a Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) degree at the University of Oregon, graduating in 1957.
