This article is about the unit of measure. For the fictional pub in Harry Potter, see Hog's Head.A hogshead is a large cask of liquid (or, less often, of a food commodity). More specifically, it refers to a specified volume, measured in either imperial or US customary, primarily applied to alcoholic beverages such as wine, ale, or cider.A tobacco hogshead was used in American colonial times to transport and store tobacco. It was a very large wooden barrel. A standardized hogshead measured 48 inches (1,219 mm) long and 30 inches (762 mm) in diameter at the head (at least 550 L or 121 imp gal; 145 US gal, depending on the width in the middle). Fully packed with tobacco, it weighed about 1,000 pounds (500 kg)A winehogshead contains about 300 L. [1]The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) notes that the hogshead wasfirststandardized by an act of Parliament in 1423, though the standards continued to vary by locality and content. Fexample, the OED cites an 1897 edition of Whitaker's Almanack, which specified the number of gallons of wine in

It's odd that baking pans today still don't have their capacity and sizes imprinted right on them; you're reduced to hauling out measuring tapes and pouring water about like you're in a kid's water play centre.
To know how much volume your Baking Pans hold, use a measuring cup and pour water in (keeping track as you go, of course, and not letting your mind wander.) Or if you're lucky, it'll be one of the ones listed in a table below. You won't have to do this for casserole dishes -- we already think of these as being in volume by quarts. When calculating a Baking Pan to use, bear in mind that recipe writers envision the recipe's batter filling the pan up only halfway, to allow cakes room in the pan to rise. So if you have 4 cups of batter,

David Mellor, Royal Designer for Industry, is unusual in this country in combining the activities of hands-on craftsman and designer with those of design entrepreneur. He has operated as designer, manufacturer and retailer, seeing the designer's function as controlling a product through all stages from concept to customer. He has felt it his mission to improve design standards over a broad spectrum, directly affecting very many people's lives.Born in Sheffield in 1930, David Mellor trained originally as a silversmith. His Sheffield background gave him a particular affinity with metalwork. This developed onwards from his early years of making one-off pieces of specially commissioned silver, including table silver forBritishembassies, to the present relatively large scale operation. David Mellor's well known ranges of stainless steel and silver cutlery are now manufactured in his own purpose-built factory in Derbyshire.David Mellor's concern with design in its broadest sense led to many important government commissions in the 1960s. The Scoville scale is a measurement of pungency, the "spicy heat" of chili peppers. The number of Scoville heat units (SHU)[1] indicates the amount of capsaicin present. Capsaicin is a chemical compound that stimulates chemoreceptor nerve endings in the skin, especially the mucous membranes; pure capsaicin has a Scoville rating of 16,000,000 SHU.The scale is named after its creator, American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville. His method, devised in 1912, is known as the Scoville Organoleptic Test.[2] The modern commonplace method for quantitative analysis uses high-performance liquid chromatography, making it possible to directly measure capsaicinoid content. In Scoville's method, a measured amount of alcohol extract of the capsaicin oil of the dried pepper is produced, after which a solution of sugar and water is added incrementally until the "heat" is just barely detectable by a panel of (usually five) tasters; the degree of dilution gives its measure on the Scoville scale.
